Ga 13,1-15

“Người đứng dậy, rời bàn ăn, cởi áo ngoài ra, và lấy khăn mà thắt lưng…bắt đầu rửa chân cho các môn đệ…” (Ga 13,14)
CHIÊM NGẮM MẸ SỐNG TIN MỪNG:
Khi dân Do Thái phải làm nô lệ cho người Ai-cập, Thiên Chúa thương xót và muốn giải thoát họ, nên đã sai Môsê điều đình với vua Pha-ra-ô nhiều lần, nhưng vua nhất định không thả cho Dân Do Thái ra đi. Cuối cùng, Thiên Chúa đã lệnh cho Dân cử hành tiệc Vượt Qua: mỗi gia đình giết một con chiên “tinh tuyền” để ăn thịt, lấy máu chiên bôi lên khung cửa làm dấu. Thiên Chúa sẽ rảo khắp Ai cập, sát hại các con đầu lòng của người Ai-cập; nhưng những nhà của người Do Thái có máu bôi trên cửa thì Thiên Chúa sẽ vượt qua, không tiêu diệt họ.[1] Nhờ biến cố đó, người Ai-cập đã cho dân Do Thái ra đi, và họ được giải thoát khỏi ách nô lệ.
Để giải thoát con người khỏi ách nô lệ tội lỗi và sự chết, Chúa Giêsu đã hiến mình như “Con Chiên tinh tuyền”, làm của ăn cho nhân loại, và Máu của Người cứu chúng ta khỏi chết muôn đời. Tam Nhật Thánh (còn gọi là Tam Nhật Vượt Qua), là ba ngày cao điểm nhất trong năm Phụng Vụ, Giáo Hội tưởng niệm đặc biệt các biến cố cuối đời của Chúa Giêsu để cứu độ chúng ta. Với Thánh lễ Tiệc Ly, chúng ta được sống lại các biến cố đã diễn ra vào chiều Thứ Năm Tuần Thánh: Chúa Giêsu đã rửa chân cho các môn đệ và lập Bí tích Thánh Thể, để hiến dâng chính mình làm của ăn của uống và của lễ đền tội thay cho chúng ta.[2]
Phúc Âm Nhất Lãm đã tường thuật kỹ về việc Chúa lập Bí Tích Thánh Thể, có lẽ vì thế nên thánh sử Gioan thấy cần dành ưu tiên cho việc Chúa rửa chân cho các môn đệ, vì bài học khiêm nhường – phục vụ ấy đã đủ nói lên tình yêu tự hạ và tự hủy của Người để nâng ta lên, cho ta được sống và sống dồi dào. Việc “Người đứng dậy, rời bàn ăn, cởi áo ngoài ra…” trong khi các môn đệ vẫn nằm tại bàn ăn, là hành vi Người hạ mình từ vị thế là Thầy, là Chúa xuống làm người tôi tớ, nô lệ. Cởi áo choàng là Người trút bỏ tất cả vinh quang danh dự. Đối với người Do thái, rửa chân là công việc của người nô lệ khác chủng tộc, còn nếu tôi tớ là người Do thái cũng không phải rửa chân cho chủ. Thế mà Chúa Giêsu đã tự nguyện làm công việc của kẻ nô lệ, để Người nâng các môn đệ lên bậc chủ nhân và rửa chân cho họ! (cc.4-5).
“Nếu Thầy là Chúa, là Thầy, mà còn rửa chân cho anh em, thì anh em cũng phải rửa chân cho nhau” (c.14). Điều đó đòi hỏi ta sẵn sàng rời khỏi chiếc ghế của địa vị, quyền bính và giai cấp, để khiêm nhường phục vụ mọi người, đồng thời nhìn nhận giá trị chân thật và cao quý của người khác và quý trọng họ. Hơn nữa, như chính Chúa đã đón nhận ta, ta cũng đón nhận người khác với tính cách rất riêng của họ và cùng giúp nhau nên tốt hơn: “Phúc cho tất cả những ai yêu mến người anh em mình ‘khi người ấy ở xa cũng như khi ở gần’”[3]
Theo bước Chúa Giêsu, Mẹ Maria luôn dành cho mọi người xung quanh một tình yêu cúi xuống và phục vụ: Vốn dĩ là mẹ của Con Thiên Chúa, nhưng Mẹ đã “tự hủy”, chẳng quản đường xa, lặn lội tìm thăm và phục vụ chị họ Elizabeth vì biết chị cần được giúp đỡ. Khi được mời dự tiệc cưới, Mẹ đã không ung dung ngồi dự tiệc, nhưng lại quan tâm đến nỗi khó khăn chủ tiệc và sẵn sàng can thiệp để đem lại niềm vui, sự bình an cho mọi người. Cùng với Chúa Giêsu, Mẹ cũng âm thầm hy sinh “đến tận cùng” vì yêu mến Chúa và nhân loại.
SỐNG TIN MỪNG VỚI MẸ:
Cùng với Mẹ Maria, tôi tập “cúi xuống và quỳ xuống” để phục vụ mọi người, nhất là những người thân trong gia đình, cách âm thầm và tậy tụy.
CẦU NGUYỆN VỚI MẸ:
Lạy Mẹ Maria, xin dạy con biết noi gương Chúa Giêsu, coi người khác trọng hơn mình để khiêm tốn và âm thầm phục vụ mọi người, nhất là những người đang sống quanh con. Amen

April the 6 th 2023. Thursday of the Lord’s Supper
Jn 13, 1-15
“Jesus got up from the table, He removed His outer garment, took a towel and began to wash His disciples’ feet” (Jn 13,14).
CONTEMPLATE MARY LIVING THE GOOD NEWS:
While the Jews had been enslaved by the Egyptians, the Lord had had mercy on them and wanted to rescue them, Moses was thus sent on negotiation with Pharaoh many times, but this Egyptian king decided resolutely not to let the Jews go out of Egypt. At last, the Lord commanded them to celebrate the Passover banquet: Each family had to kill a lamb “without blemish” for eating. Some of these lambs blood must be put on the doorposts as the marks. The Lord would go through the land of Egypt and He would kill all of the Egyptians’ first-born; but He would passed over the houses where there were the blood marks on these doorposts, so they weren’t destroyed. Thanks to this incident, the Jews were permitted for leaving the land of Egypt, and they were rescued from their slavery.
For the purpose of rescuing the humanity from the slavery and death, Jesus dedicated Himself as a “Pure Lamb”, with which we have been fed and saved from the eternal death by His Blood. Three Holy Days (are also called “The Sacred Paschal Triduum”) are the peak-peak three days of the Liturgy Year. The incidents in the end of Jesus’ life so that the humanity will be saved by His Blood are commemorated specially in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The incidents which happened in the Holy Thursday afternoon are celebrated: Jesus washed His disciples’ feet and established the Eucharist Sacrament, in order to dedicate Himself as the food, the drink and the sin compensation offering on our behalf.
Maybe due to Jesus’ Eucharist Sacrament establishment was reported in detail in the Synoptic Gospels, so St. Historian John got priority to the event through which the disciples’ feet were washed by Jesus, because His humility and service lesson is enough to demonstrate that He humbled and emptied Himself, so that we will be raised highly, we will live and will have an abundant life.
“Jesus got up from the table, He removed His outer garment, took a towel and began to wash His disciples’ feet” (Ga 13, 14), while His disciples were still lying at the dining table, this act of Jesus proved that He completely humbled Himself: From the Lord, the Master‘s state, Jesus assumed the condition of a servant, a slave. His act of removing His outer garment means that He got rid of Himself, of all His glory and honour. For the Jews, feet wash act is a duty of a slave from a different race, this duty wasn’t also intended for a Jew servant. But Jesus voluntarily had done a slave’s duty through washing His disciples’s feet, so that the disciples would be raised as a master rank. (Ga. 13, 4-5).
“If I, the Lord and Master, I have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet”. (Ga. 13, 14). Through Jesus’ act, we have been required to be ready for leaving our position of authority, power and rank, in order to modestly serve everyone, we simultaneously have to recognise the others’ honest and noble value and respect all of them. Moreover, as well as the Lord has received us, we have to receive the others too, with their very personal and private characters, and we have to help each other for becoming the better ones. Blessed are those who love the others, although they are near as well as far away.
Mary imitated Jesus through dedicating everyone a “bending down” love and service. As a Mother of God’s Son, Mary “emptied Herself”, She wasn’t afraid of long distance and traveled up and down the hills for visiting and serving Elizabeth, because She knew that Her cousin needed for help. When Mary was invited to a wedding banquet at Cana, She didn’t sit deliberately at the banquet table, but She concerned Herself about the banquet host’s difficulty of lacking for wine and She was ready to interfere with Her Son, so that all of the table guests could be brought the joy and the peace. Together with Jesus, Mary silently sacrificed “to the end” for the purpose of loving God and the humanity.
LIVE THE GOOD NEWS WITH MARY:
I will imitate Mary through practising for “bending and kneeling down”, in order to serve everyone silently and devotedly, specially my family members.
PRAY WITH MARY:
O Mary, teach me how to imitate Jesus, to esteem the others more than myself, so that I will serve them silently and modestly, specially those who are living around me. Amen.
O Mary conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to You.
